The earliest known reference to the church, in the Norwich Taxation of 1254, gives only the name of the church: 'Ecclesia de Gwidelwern'. Although the dedication of the church is first attested only in the eighteenth century, the association of a nearby well to Beuno dates from the late seventeenth century.
