Place-name deriving from the well that sprung up at when Winefride was martyred here, before being restored to life by her uncle, Beuno, at whose monastery the episode took place.
Subsequently the cult of Winefride supplanted that of Beuno, and the dedication of a nearby well, only attested in the nineteenth century, is all that remains of his cult in the area, although the church a few miles away at Whitford is also tentatively associated with Beuno. The payment of a Beuno tax in 1535, may indicate that this was the case, although other records suggest that the tax was in fact paid to Clynnog Fawr.
