The place-name is attested near Caerwent and retained as the name of a farm and house near Caerwent. A church recorded as capella sancti Dauid is mentioned in the twelfth-century Llandaff Episcopal Acta. The form Dewystowe occurs after 1250, although there is a relative paucity of Welsh forms, the earliest of which is probably 1539 Llandewy.
