Place-name first attested as Lanmutauc in 1254. Mwrog's association with the area around Ruthin is attested in the mid-fifteenth century when he was described as 'ail Beuno Rhuthun' (a second Beuno for Ruthin) in a poem by Gruffudd Nannau. A field neighbouring the church was attested as Bryn Mwrog in 1672.
