References to a eccluis Santbreit and ecclesiam brigide are found in the Book of Llandaff in the twelfth century, although the location of the church is uncertain.

The church was previously thought to have been the church at St Bride's Netherwent, although this seems unlikely and it was perhaps the church in Caldicot now dedicated to Mary.
