Place-name first attested in the fourteenth century.

The English form Sanynt Brydes is attested in the early seventeenth century, and Browne Willis lists it as 'St. Brides Major', but otherwise the Welsh form predominated. The place-name survives as Llansantffraed Farm and Llansantffraed Court Hotel.
