Lost place-name first attested as Castelloyd and Mertherkenang in 1307.

No church is known here, although a holy well dedicated to Cynog helps to confirm the association with the cult of Cynog ⁠– whether or not it is the same Cynog, son of Brychan. Although the merthyr place-name is lost, it partly survives in the form Parc Cynog, a hillfort located adjacent to Castle Lloyd Farm.
