The church at Cardigan was dedicated to the Holy Trinity when granted to Gloucester Abbey in about 1115, but the dedication to Mary is recorded in the late twelfth century. The priory church became an important pilgrimage site for 'Our Lady of the Taper' in the later Middle Ages, and the present Roman Catholic church (and Welsh National Shrine) takes this dedication.
