1. Church of St Peter, Newborough , Anglesey (Dedication)
Details
Medieval church dedicated to Peter, adjacent to the site of the medieval court of Llys Rhosyr. The commote name Rhosyr, as well as Llananno, have been recognised as aliases for Newborough. The former, Rhosyr, has been linked with Mary, although its meaning is more likely to be derived from mŷr (plural of môr, sea, hence 'moor of the seas') rather than deriving from Mair (Mair: the moor of Mary). It has also been suggested that the church was originally two churches, one dedicated to Mary (the Royal Chapel, now the chancel), and one to Peter.
