John the Baptist (Ieuan Fedyddiwr)

The Llanddewi form of the place-name given by Gerald of Wales in around 1191, Landewi Nanthotheni, alludes to a chapel dedicated to David that stood there. The dedication of the church now adjacent to the abbey ruins is still to David (and was marked in this way on the first edition OS map), although the dedication of the church at Llanthony recorded by Browne Willis is given as John the Baptist. This might allude to the dedication of the priory church or a chapel or altar of the priory, which was still remembered in the eighteenth century.
